A New Year

Wow, can you believe we are already into the seventh year of 2000?  Time just seems to fly by so fast.

Yesterday, my kids and I spent the afternoon at my BF's house with his mom and brother celebrating Christmas since they were all sick last week.  My BF is so domestic and had a ham, turkey, cheesy potatoes, and candied carrots.  His mother is an absolute doll.  She's been battling lymphoma for well over six years but never, ever complains.  I managed to get a picture of them.  His brother is his polar opposite and wasn't as cooperative.

We went to Day's Inn for a couple of hours and a couple of drinks.  Yay, I wasn't sick this year.  I got my party hat and all the New Year doo-dads and got my midnight smooch.  Then we went home, lit his fireplace and watched some movies.

Today was pork and sauerkraut at my mom's house which is a tradition in this neck of the woods.

Now we start a new year with dreams and hopes.  I'm determined to quit smoking.  Cold turkey is not working, and I can't take Wellbutrin because I had a concussion a few years back, and Wellbutrin causes seizures in those who have had concussions.  I need to call Blue Cross to see if they will cover the newest drug for smoking cessation then check with the doctor to see if it will work with my other meds.  I'm buying a patch tomorrow.  Anyway, I've cut the amount of smokes in half today.

No other resolutions but I also plan to eat healthier and get back on track with the sodium I consume and hope to drop about 20 lbs.

Curious me:  What are the food traditions for NY's day for other parts of the country and the UK?

Blessings!   Thanks, Missie, for the siggy!

I don't think there is any tradition for NY's food in California, that I know of.  People just sit around and snack.. order pizza... and watch that stupid ass football on TV! lol
Now... I do remember my mother making pork ribs and saurkraut!  Oh yes, maam!  Not on NYD but just whenever she felt like it during the year.  I believe she always made mashed potatoes with it too.  I remember loving to mix my saurkraut with the potatoes.  Yum!  Gosh.. I haven't had that since my mom died.  Almost 30 years ago! lol  Good eats! Yummo!
I remember her making gravy from the bacon grease and putting it on bread!  Another yummo! lol  My kids love bread and gravy (for some reason they prefer the bread over bisquits).  The only time they get it the way my mom used to make it is when I make it for them!  She used to make ham hocks and beans, with cornbread.  Oh, man.. here you are talking about going on a diet, and I'll talking about food! lol

Glad you had a good time with the boyfriend.. :)
I stayed home and forced myself to stay awake until Dick Clark dropped his old ball in Time's Square.  Then I kiss my dog, and we went to bed!  Not together, I might add! lol

Love you

Happy New Year's dear friend.  Glad you got your get together with BF and family.  Sounds like a feast.  We usually just have black eyed peas on NY's day here in W TX...with whatever else we decide on.  Nobody likes them in our house. LOL I hope you can find a drug you can take for quitting smoking. The wellbutrin was a Godsend. I don't make usually make resolutions because I can't keep them, but I made this one last year and didn't break it, so I made it again this year.   I resolve not commit any murders in 2007.  LOL I wish you best of luck with your non smoking and healthier eating. And that 2007 is a blessed and joyfilled year for you and yours.
Hugs, Barb

Happy New Year, Chris!!

I just wanted to tell you to check out www.Quitnet.com for online help in your quit. I smoked 2+ packs/day for more than 27 years and managed to quit 7-1/2 YEARS ago using Zyban (Wellbutrin), nicotine patches, Quitnet and Willpower (to tell you the truth, the Zyban made me so jittery, I'm not sure it did a whole lot of good -- really, the willpower and Quitnet are what helped me most!).

Anyway, believe me, if I could do it, YOU CAN TOO!! Look up my Quitnet profile (Lazarai) and those of other quitters for inspiration....

Good luck!!!
:) Carol

We do not really have any traditional New Year's good. I guess we get so sick of all the goodies over Chrismas.  I used to do a roast regularly for the days years ago but now there is just Mike and I here we had stew lol!

Hi Chris,
Good luck on quitting the tobacco habit. Better not smoke alongside the patches, but your call. It's willpower that lies at the bottom of ceasing smoking; pills and patches are only secondary.

The pork and sauerkraut must be a PA tradition.  It's the only time I eat too.  Good for you to stop smoking.  I know you can do it.  Have a great day.

Watching weight is even harder I think, if you like your food, but I must get down to the same Chris. The only food traditions at my house for NEW YEARS DAY are as I have done today eat everything in sight to clear out the fridge and every other stroge space of all that was left LOL!! Haaaaaaaaaa!! I made a good job of it,so it is now down to a little bit of This and That good healthy eating as from tomorrow. What a wonderful lady your BF mom sounds.Well done (CLAP CLAP)
on the halving of your ciggy smoking today!!Proud of you. Take care God Bless.

Chris, we should try and quit together. I need to quit smoking and a partner in the impending train wreck feeling could help...hell, if I am going to live in hell for a few weeks, why do it alone,lol.....think on it...I would love to do it with someone. We could call each other daily to encourage or lash at eachother,lol....~Raven

So I'm quite behind!  Sounds like a great NY's day you had.  That Days Inn again!  Here in our neck of the woods (Southeast NC) our New Year's meal has to be black eyed peas and collards (or some type of green).  I had a salad with pecan crusted chicken, mandarin oranges and dried cranberries.....close??  Hope so.  Funny cause we had Pork chops tonight and I said to Tom, shoulda topped them with Kraut! LOL!!!!

We've always made a Turkey on New Year's. Not sure if that's what is everyone elses tradition...but it's ours.
Quitting smoking is one of the most difficult things.  I have a friend who used to drink....was overweight....and smoked.  He quit drinking....lost 130lb's....and stopped smoking. Not all at once. This was over the period of years.  He said the smoking was the hardest to give up and he still loves the smell of a cigarette.
It's gonna be tough....but maybe cutting back is the best way to begin.  I have a friend who tried to quit and he now smokes ONE cigarette a day.  Allows only one.  I'm not sure that's so good...but he couldn't quit totally.
Good luck to you Chris.  It's not easy.  But, you sound determined.  I wish you only happiness this coming year.
Love you...Pam
